West Ham v Southampton preview

West Ham will be hoping to lift the mood at the London Stadium when they face Southampton.

West Hams last home game, a 3-0 defeat by Burnley, was marred by pitch invasions and protests against owners David Sullivan and David Gold.

The Hammers are set to implement "heightened" security measures this weekend in a bid to avoid similar troubles.

West Ham have lost four of their last five Premier League matches and are 17th in the table, two points above Southampton, who occupy the final spot in the relegation zone.

Mark Hughes will be taking charge of his first league match as Southampton manager, having started with an FA Cup quarter-final win over Wigan.

"Its a key game for both sides," he said. "West Ham have their own problems to deal with, it seems, with their home games so we have got to take the opportunity, if it presents itself, to be able to exert pressure on them and maybe affect the atmosphere in the ground and what seemed to occur against Burnley.

"Weve got to affect the confidence of their group. Clearly there is some anxiety surrounding the club at the moment.

"Thats a negative and it certainly affected them in the last game, going by what some of their players talked about afterwards."

Charlie Austin is in contention for Southampton after recovering from the hamstring injury which had kept him out since Christmas.

Captain Steven Davis is also close to returning from his hamstring problem.

Edimilson Fernandes is available again for West Ham after four months out with an ankle injury. Arthur Masuaku is also back after completing a six-match ban.

However, Manuel Lanzini is a doubt with a knee injury and James Collins faces a late fitness test.

Newcastle and Southampton meet in a vital relegation scrap at St James Park on Saturday afternoon.

Rafael Benitezs side start the weekend in 16th, just one place and a single point above their opponents, and know that victory could prove invaluable to their cause.

And the Newcastle boss has told his players to approach each of their remaining nine games as cup finals as they attempt to secure their Premier League status.

He said: "Every game is important. This is the most important because it is the next one, but we have to keep going to the end. We will be trying to win, but we will be doing that until the last one. Every game is a final for us now."

Southampton boss Mauricio Pellegrino, who has played for and worked under Benitez, insists his players are well aware they are in a relegation scrap and believes they are up to the task of securing their survival.

He said: "It is difficult to talk to the fans and say we are getting better because since January the team lifted performances, but now we need results. That is the reality.

"As a manager I have to think about what to do. We need results but the consequence is what we do on the pitch."

Newcastle will make a late decision on the fitness of midfielder Jonjo Shelvey, who missed last weekends 2-0 defeat at Liverpool with a knee problem, but is back in training and could be included.

Striker Islam Slimani is still working his way back from a thigh problem, while keeper Rob Elliot (thigh) and Jesus Gamez (ankle) are also out.

Southampton will still be without captain Steven Davis, who has missed the last three games with a hamstring problem and faces at least another week on the sidelines.

Defender Maya Yoshida (knee) and striker Charlie Austin (hamstring) remain on the casualty list.
